What to Bring for the Dress Rehearsal and Concert
Each dancer should bring a clearly labelled plastic tub containing:
-
A water bottle (labelled)
-
Any required tights, shoes, or personal costume items as per the costume list
All costumes are provided by DDC and will be hanging in the change rooms, ready for students at both the Friday tech/dress rehearsal and on concert day.
Each costume is tagged with the dancer’s name.
Please ensure these remain in the change rooms and are not taken home. A replacement charge may apply if costumes are missing or damaged.
Backstage Guidelines
To keep backstage areas safe and organised:
-
No school bags are allowed in change rooms.
-
Only bring the labelled tub listed above.
-
All performers should arrive in their own clothes.
-
After each routine, students must remove their costume and return it to its hanger — no costumes on the floor or taken home.
-
At the end of the concert, costumes will be returned to DDC at the theatre. Please ensure your child has a change of clothes to go home in.
-
Any lost or damaged costumes while in your care may incur a replacement fee.
Hair Requirements
All performers are requested to have clean, well-groomed hair pulled back off the face.
Use bobby pins to secure any loose hair or fringes. Gel or hairspray is optional.
Per-dance hair details:
-
6–7 yrs Ballet – “Butterflies”: Low ponytail, slicked back neatly off the face. Please send extra bobby pins to help secure their flower crown.
-
8–9 yrs Ballet – “Doll Dance”: Classic ballet bun. Refer to video tutorial: How to make a ballet bun
-
10–13 yrs Ballet – “Spanish Ballet”: Ballet bun.
-
Youth Ballet – “Fairies”: Ballet bun.
-
Tap – “Hot Shoe Shuffle”: Ballet bun (follows straight after ballet routine).
-
All other routines: Low ponytail, hair off the face and tidy.
-
Junior Musical Theatre (only): If your performer is in this routine only they may have creative freedom with hair choice — ponytails, plaits, or styles that suit their character.
-
10–11 yrs Hip Hop (only): If your performer is in this routine only they may have creative freedom with hair choice: Plaits or ponytail under beanie.
If you need help with your child’s hair, please contact us ASAP so we can arrange a backstage helper specifically for your child.
Make-Up Requirements
We encourage a natural, child-appropriate look — the goal is to enhance faces under stage lights, not change them.
-
Minimal stage make-up.
-
A small amount of red lipstick and light eye-make-up is suitable.
-
Heavy make-up or false eyelashes are not permitted.
-
No make-up at all is also perfectly appropriate — we love children looking like children.
Jewellery & Accessories
All jewellery must be removed before arrival — including earrings, necklaces, watches, and bracelets.
This is important for safety and stage uniformity.
Primary School Sports Day Reminder
For students participating in Sports Day on Friday 7 November, please avoid:
-
Hair dye or colored hairspray
-
Face or body paint (e.g. red or blue faction colors)
These products are very difficult to remove and can stain hair, skin, and costumes — especially for professional photos.
Children can still show team spirit with ribbons, socks, or other non-permanent accessories in their faction colors.
Concert Photography
-
All students will be professionally photographed during the dress rehearsal and matinee concert.
-
To ensure beautiful results, please follow the above hair and make-up guidelines closely.
FAQ’S
Can parents watch the technical and dress rehearsal on Friday 7th Nov?
A: No, during rehearsals we strive to create a professional, focused environment, and we also want to keep the concert a surprise. Due to the amount of children who are involved in the Junior concert we do not have the room for parents in the backstage areas unless we have previously arranged that you are a parent helper.
Q: What are dance briefs and body stockings, and why are they important for dancers?
A: Dance briefs and body stockings are specialised undergarments designed for dancers to wear under their costumes. Dance briefs provide coverage and ensure that underwear is not visible, while body stockings offer a seamless look across the entire body, ideal for quick costume changes and maintaining uniformity in appearance. Both are crucial for preserving modesty and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of dance costumes during performances. We strongly recommend that all dancers have either dance briefs or a body stocking, especially those performing in multiple routines. These can be purchased by contacting us via email. We have limited items remaining.
Can we film the concert or take photos on our phones?
A: No, we have the concert professionally filmed and it is a policy of DDC that you do not film or photograph our concerts.
